About Me

My motivations

I like learning, discovering and creating.  Formulating solutions to complex problems gives me an opportunity to express my creativity and to contribute to a more positive world. I teach because I enjoy empowering individuals to grow and to achieve their aspirations.  I feel a sense of satisfaction when my students achieve their goals. I appreciate the big things in life, like the blue sky and the sunshine.

About my subject matter expertise

I work as a lecturer in law at Newcastle University (United Kingdom). I am an expert in the governance of artificial intelligence technology. I believe that it is important to understand artificial intelligence as being part of a social process, a technical creation and a reflection of society. I focus on the governance of artificial intelligence technology from the perspectives of international human rights law, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. More recently, I began to work on the application of domestic law to tackle challenges associated with using artificial intelligence technology. My current work concerns proposing how treaties in international human rights law prohibiting discrimination and the Equality Act 2010 can respond to the challenges arising from the employment of artificial intelligence technology. The Equality Act 2010 applies in England, Scotland and Wales.

I hold a Bachelor of Laws with honours from the London School of Economics and Political Science. I completed examinations in order to bring my education equivalent to a Canadian law degree. I gained a Master of Laws with distinction in public international law from the London School of Economics and Political Science. I completed a Doctor of Philosophy in law at the University of Essex. I was a visiting researcher at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom) and Emory University (United States of America).

About my teaching experience

I developed a successful module “artificial intelligence: law, theory and practice” for Newcastle University (United Kingdom). I have three years of experience of teaching on this module. Additionally, I taught on a number of undergraduate and graduate courses. I was invited to be a guest speaker twice by the University of Pennsylvania (United States of America). I delivered a professional development workshop at McGill University (Canada) and TMC Asser Institute (The Netherlands). The Yeditepe University in Turkey invited me to deliver teaching for their summer school. My students comment on my ability to explain very complex material clearly and on my helpfulness.

Who has already used my expertise

In my academic capacity I regularly submit expert evidence to the Westminster Parliament in the United Kingdom. I comment on the policy and legal issues relating to the governance of artificial intelligence technology. Additionally, I shared expert evidence with the Australian Human Rights Commission. The following organisations have cited my work: Swedish Agency for Work Environment Expertise, Australian Human Rights Commission, Swedish Defence Research Agency, RAND Corporation and the Netherlands Scientific Council for Government Policy. I consulted the Ukrainian Research Institute of Social and Forensic Psychiatry and Drug Abuse of the Ministry of Health.

What My Students Say

I had a pleasure working with Tanya on my master thesis during my LLM at Tilburg University. Tanya was a great support during this journey, offering a wide range of expertise. I was particularly impressed with Tanya’s ability to provide inspiring feedback, which encouraged me to be even more creative and open-minded with my legal analysis. Tanya was accommodating, always optimistic, and excited about the work we’ve been doing. I could not recommend her enough!

Kasia Kiedrowska

Tanya was both my artificial intelligence lecturer and my Master of Laws dissertation supervisor. She is approachable, knowledgeable, and engaging, drawing on both the human rights and practical considerations of the increasing utilisation of artificial intelligence in legal practice and wider society. Her thought-provoking teaching and expertise on the issues  was invaluable in the writing of my dissertation. I highly recommend Tanya.

Lucy Hanlon

Being a student of Dr. Krupiy was an enriching learning experience. Under her expert guidance, I deepened my understanding of artificial intelligence legislation and regulation, while also exploring the intricate technical aspects of this emerging technology. Dr. Krupiy fostered an environment where I could think independently about the societal impact of artificial intelligence, while considering diverse legislative intervention approaches, such as regulation-based, rights-based, and social justice-based frameworks. This course has also helped me sharpen my legal research and writing skills, enabling me to critically engage with the complexities of artificial intelligence and formulate well-founded legal arguments.
